Artist’s History
Hilary Jemal was trained in art at London Central Art School. She then married and moved to the United States where she worked mostly in illustration and portraiture.
After moving to the Mediterranean Hilary had several exhibitions of work in acrylic, oil, watercolor, and pastels. Her work has been sold internationally.
Hilary has done live court drawings for the newspapers and also character sketches of writers to accompany their newspaper articles. She has also written weekly newspaper restaurant reviews and published three illustrated ‘dining out’ books, which were ‘best sellers’.
The artist has also illustrated several books by other writers and was employed by a five-star hotel to do decorative paintings and illustrations for brochures and publicity.
Over the years Hilary has painted many portraits, specializing in life-sized portraits in oil and delicate drawings of children in terra-cotta pencil.
Artist’s Statement
Over the years I have painted and sold many paintings in various mediums but the subjects that most interest me have always been figures and faces. I obviously love to work from life but when that is not possible I am happy to use photographs, possibly backed up by a single sitting. I can undertake head and shoulder portraits or three-quarters (including hands) possibly with character indications or points of interest in the background.
I have agents in the US, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and in New Canaan, Connecticut, who can discuss the desired portrait and arrange photographic sessions.
